7 Tips to Stay Warm and Save Money This Winter

As the seasons change from warm, to cool to cold, we all will be turning the heat on in our homes sooner or later, but that doesn’t mean your gas or electric bill has to skyrocket. At Byrum Heating & A/C, Inc., we want to make sure your home feels comfortable this winter season, while using the energy efficiently as possible. To do this, follow these seven tips provided by the ENERGY STAR program at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

1. Know the Facts:

The average family spends $1,500 a year on energy bills, with nearly half of that spent on heating and cooling. Energy-efficient heating and cooling equipment, installed alongside a well-sealed duct system, can save as much as 20 percent on annual energy costs!

2. Keep it Clean:

A dirty air filter can increase your energy costs and lead to early equipment failure. To prevent this from happening, be sure to clean or change the air filter in your heating and cooling system regularly. Likewise, have your equipment checked seasonally to ensure everything is operating efficiently and safely. Dirt and neglect are the #1 reasons these systems fail; so seasonal check-ups will help identify problems early on.

3. Bundle Up:

Hidden gaps and cracks in your home can add up to as much airflow as if a window were open. When heat escapes your home, your system has to work harder to maintain the set temperature, which causes more energy to be used and ultimately more money to be spent. Home Sealing of the outer walls, ceiling, windows and floors can improve your home, and can save up to 10 percent in energy costs. Start by sealing any air leaks and adding insulation, paying special attention to your attic and basement, where the biggest gaps and cracks are often found.

4. Tighten the Air Ducts:

If you have a forced air furnace or heat pump, then a duct system is responsible for circulating warm air throughout your home. Leaky ducts can reduce your system’s efficiency by 20 percent, causing your equipment to work harder than necessary to keep your home at the set temperature you find comfortable. Ask your Byrum Heating & A/C, Inc. contractor about improving the ducts in your home.

5. Don’t Oversize:

When replacing old and outdated equipment, make sure your new equipment is properly sized for your home. An oversized system will not only cost more to purchase, but also cost more to operate it, as well. Furthermore, an oversized system will cycle on and off more frequently, reducing the comfort in your home and leading to early system failures and unnecessary repair costs. Correct equipment sizing will ensure your system works as efficiently as possible.

6. Consult a Professional:

Find an experienced, licensed contractor before embarking on any heating and cooling overhaul. At Byrum Heating & A/C, Inc., all of our technicians are all NATE Certified, who work efficiently throughout the timely completion of your project.

7. Shop Smart:

If your heating and cooling equipment have not been regularly maintained and is more than 15-years-old, it is time to have your equipment checked by a professional. Old equipment costs more to operate per year than newer models. The equipment you need to be sure to maintain or replace are:

  • Furnaces
  • Boilers
  • Heat Pumps
